Eleven Years (&)Still Building

I opened Photoshop in 2015, right after my 10th. None of it was planned. Here is how it actually went.

It started as a hobby
Right after my 10th, in the middle of India's DSLR years. I learned Photoshop to retouch photos for whoever asked. No career attached to it.

It started as a hobby
I started messing about in Photoshop at 14, retouching photos. Everyone had just bought a DSLR and nobody knew what to do with the files.
Science stream after my 10th, because that is what you did. Design stayed a hobby. Nobody told me it could be a job.
Engineering, and a design head
Science stream, then Computer Science Engineering. I wanted to be an ethical hacker. Instead I ended up running design for my college.

I wanted to be an ethical hacker. I ended up in Computer Science Engineering in 2017, which is roughly the same building and nothing like the same job.
The hobby came with me. I ended up running design for the college, which was the first time anyone put me in charge of the work instead of just asking me for a file.
Figma, in lockdown
I found Figma during the lockdown and went deep fast. Freelance work started arriving through Instagram. Banners, logos, creatives, whatever people asked for.

Lockdown hit and I found Figma. It was the first tool where the thing I drew and the thing that got built were recognisably the same object.
Freelance work started showing up through Instagram. Banners, logos, whatever people asked for. They came because the work looked different, which is a thin reason to hire someone and a real one.
First real product role
Ratel Capitals. A component library cut UI turnaround by 30%, and usability testing on onboarding lifted completion 15%. Beta shipped in under three months.

First real product role
Ratel Capitals was the first time there was a product around the work instead of a brief. I built a component library that cut UI turnaround by 30%, and we shipped the beta in under three months.
Onboarding was where we lost people. I assumed the flow was fine. Testing showed users stalling at one specific step, so I rebuilt that step around what I actually watched them do. Completion went up 15%.
That is still how I work. Find where people fall off, fix that, measure again.
Cognizant, and the cloning discipline
Enterprise dashboards for finance and healthcare. On the side I cloned screens off Pinterest pixel for pixel. That is how you learn the system underneath.

Cognizant, and the cloning discipline
I joined Cognizant in 2022 as a fullstack developer and moved properly into UI/UX alongside the job. Enterprise dashboards for finance and healthcare, where contrast ratios and focus states are the job rather than a polish pass.
It is also where I learned to argue with data instead of taste. A/B tests, UAT, real release cycles.
On the side I cloned screens off Pinterest pixel for pixel. Sounds like a shortcut. It is the opposite. You cannot clone something properly without working out the system underneath it.
Sugee, and 700,000 users
Rural fintech. The mobile app, seven banking dashboards, a 300+ component system across 600+ cooperative branches. Low literacy, low connectivity, real money.

Sugee, and 700,000 users
Farmers and cooperative banks needed tools that worked despite low literacy and worse connectivity. I designed the whole thing. Brand, an 80+ screen app, seven banking dashboards, a 300+ component system.
The constraints made most of the decisions. Simplify KYC. Assume the connection drops. Build a system big enough that 600+ branches could be served without redrawing anything.
It reached over 800,000 rural customers and more than ₹1,500 crore in transactions. It taught me what designing for real money at real scale actually costs.

Cinestox, zero to one
80+ mobile screens, 50+ dashboards, 12,000 signups, four designers to mentor. Then India banned the category and it stopped. That was regulation, not the product.

Cinestox, zero to one
I left Cognizant for Cinetrade and Cinestox. Zero to one, a whole product, fast. 80+ mobile screens, 50+ dashboards, MVP through to launch.
I was lead designer with four people to mentor. My job was holding the quality bar while leaving them room to own their work.
We got to 12,000 signups. Then India banned the category and it stopped. That was regulation, not the product. The work was real and it is still the clearest zero to one story I have.

I started the studio and built the team before the pipeline. That is the wrong order, and I learned it the expensive way. Pipeline first. Team second.

VelossaLabs, and the lesson
I started the studio about a year ago. First client was an early commerce platform. Proper contract, work delivered, then they ran out of money and could not pay. I let it go. A contract protects you legally. A deposit protects you practically. I take one now.
The first team was four people. It dissolved when the leads dried up, and the leads dried up because there was no lead generation at all. I was waiting for projects to appear.
So the real mistake was building the team before the pipeline. Pipeline first, team second. I learned that one the expensive way.
Still building
Forty-three weeks of offline-first cataloging for AuctionFlex, finished at the end of July. Warehouses, poor signal, real constraints. VelossaLabs is getting rebuilt now, properly this time.

AuctionFlex X. Professional catalogers stuck on slow desktop tools, usually standing in a warehouse with no signal. I led product design and the role went well past UI into scoping and working with engineering.
The instinct was to put every feature on the main capture screen. These are people doing the same task hundreds of times a day, so speed beats richness. I stripped it to the fastest possible path and pushed everything else out of the way. That meant saying no to things stakeholders wanted.
50+ production screens, offline first, a system spanning Material UI and Apple HIG, running in major HiBid auction houses.
